Learning through Questioning

While reading this text, keep these overarching questions in mind as you encounter various scenes or topics that strike you. Further, think about how YOU would answer these questions. By doing so, you can place yourself in a mind-frame similar to that of Enrique. Sometimes, simply reading about the actions, deeds taken on by the characters in the works that we read is not enough. As a reader, I personally like to think about what it is like to be in their shoes. I feel that in a way, it brings one closer to the characters by broadening one's understanding and appreciation of certan actions, invokes empathy and compassion for our characters who encounter hardship, and finally, it allows one to go beyond reading the text-- it involves application of one's set of beliefs and values into the reading. So, as you read, keep some of these questions in mind. Feel free, also, to formulate your own lists of questions. What would you like to ask the author, or any of the characters in the reading? What have you learned about this journey, or immigration in general? etc.

Here are some overarching questions to guide you:

1. How important is family loyalty?
2. How far would you go to reconnect to a distant loved one?
3. What causes a seemingly ordinary person to do heroic/extraordinary things?
4. How easy is it to overcome fears, or other obstacles, in order to reach your goals?
5. Thinking of the characteristics of an "odyssey", how does Enrique's Journey fit into this category?
6. What does it mean to be courageous?
7. How much of who we are is shaped by forces outside our control?
8. How does where we come from decide what we do with our lives?

Family loyalty is very important in Enrique's Journey. Enrique's shows great responibilty and trustworthy a child could have. Having the diginity and confidence to travel to another country to reach your mother who abandon him as a child so she can provide for him better. Then Enrique who decides to go visit his mother in another country goes through bruelty beatings. This book is very good. I recommend this book to everyone.

Tianna, I haven't read the book, but it must take great loyalty to go through such harships and sacrifice for your family.

How far would you go to reconnect with a distant loveone?
* For someone as close as an reletive to me such as my mother or siblings i would climb a mountain and more. If my mother went away like Enrique's mother did i cannot say that i wouldnt be contemplating taking the dangerouse trip to be with my mother again when i was old enough either. Its like instinct to want to be with your mother especially if she rised you for some of your life and you still have memories of her.

Why is family loyalty important?

In Eurique's Journey family loyalty is very important. To be loyal is to be faithful to a person a tradtion or a duty. In the story Eurique's feelings of attachment and affection leads him to be a person who feels that nobody loves him. And constant changes occur. For example he lives with his mother at first, his father leaves him to be with another women. Then he moves with his uncle who died he is then tossed around again. Eurique is constantly feeling rejection. The only person who can soothe his pain is his mother. Because his family rejects him their loyalty he no longer knows. This is why family loyalty is important.

What does courageous mean to you?
When someone is courageous they are daring, gallant, intrepid, and brave. Brave however means when someone is fearless, confident, heroic and determine. In Enrique's Journey Enrique was courageous when he was on the search for his mother. He found ways to make an attempt to America even though it was dangerous he however then was able to overcome his fears and struggle to accomplish his obstacles in finding his mother.

To reconnect with a family member I would go above and beyond and do whatever it takes to reunite with that person. If I was in Enrique's shoes and my mother lived in a different country than me, I would do whatever it took just to live with her whether it be working to save money or being rebellious breaking rules/regulations just to reunite with her. I would risk putting my life on the line just for the chance to be reunited with that specific family member. Enrique is very determined to be reunited with his mother, at this point of the story he has attempted eight different times to leave Honduras and sneak into the United States to find his mother and has no intentions of giving up. Personally I would act in the exact same manner as Enrique because the love of a mother and her child is so strong, its too much of a burden to be away from her even for the shortest amount of time.

It's interesting how everyone would do the same as Enrique in a similar situation. I for one would not- if my mother was away, I would somehow try to accept that- she made a conscious decision to leave. Though it may be against her will, she acted in a way she thought was best. I'm not saying it would be easy, but I am saying that being loyal CAN mean letting someone go, if that is their decision.
